List of Summer Songs: Make Your Summer Sizzle

1. Lil Nas X & Billy Ray Cyrus – Old Town Road

Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road", the year's biggest hit, celebrates its 16th week atop the Billboard Hot 100. "Old Town Road" is so much more than a hit at this point – it's like centuries of American music were all building up to these 113 seconds of genius. Every weird strain of American culture is in this song everywhere, as Lil Nas X rides his tractor all over our clichés of sexual and cultural identity. This song taps into all the contradictions in U.S. music: a hip-hop redneck trap-country goth flex, mixing up Trent Reznor and Billy Ray Cyrus, sounding both futuristic and ancient. It just likes a savage journey to the heart of the American dream.

2. Billie Eilish – Bad Guy

Few artists in modern pop are as in-demand as Billie Eilish, the 17-year-old singer-songwriter who has exploded on streaming services ahead of her debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, out March 29. "Bad Guy" features a minimalist production consisting of synth bass, a kick drum, amplified finger snaps and 808 bass, which stands out of all the songs. It received generally positive reviews from music critics, with several praising its lyrical content. Try not to bob your head to the beat of this song. It's physically impossible. It's going to add some cool shade to everyone's summer.

3. Khalid – Talk

Khalid, a R&B singer, offers up the first preview of his single "Talk". "Talk" is a midtempo and R&B Nu disco song. The track has ascended to top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking the singer's fifth top-10 hit and matching his highest solo outing to date. The track also topped Billboard Billboard's US Rhythmic chart and received the remix treatment by UK duo Disclosure. Khalid explained that the track is set in the honeymoon stage of a relationship and talks "about where we're going before we get lost."

4. Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber – I Don't Care

The idea that Ed Sheeran can pair Justin Bieber for an entire album sounds like the story in the Arabian Nights. But the outcoming of the single title "I Don't Care" made the idea work in practice. "I Don't Care" was joined forces by Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber, and peaked at number one in 26 countries (including the UK Singles Chart) and number two in 7 others (including the US Billboard Hot 100), in all behind Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road". The song makes Justin Bieber become Mr. Song of the Summer again, even if this particular song isn't even up to his or Sheeran's usual pop writing mastery.

5. Jonas Brother – Sucker

A Jonas Brothers single is one of the early contenders for song of summer 2019? Indeed, the surprise comeback of Nick, Joe and Kevin was heralded by "Sucker," leaving fans burning up with excitement. "Sucker" is a sly and sprightly piece of pop-rock that rocketed straight to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and the US Hot Digital Songs chart, with 88,000 copies sold in its first week -- giving Jonas Brothers the biggest hit of their career. With the debut of the song, the music video catches everyone's eye. The video features colorful and lavish scenes of the three couples together on a huge estate as the brother sings about being "Sucker" for the women.

7. Lizzo - Truth Hurts

Summer 2019 needs a women's empowerment anthem as the song we all blast. Lizzo's single "Truth Hurt"" was released two years ago. Though it did not chart at the time of its release, it later became a viral sleeper hit in 2019 following the release of Lizzo's third studio album Cuz I Love You, reaching number six on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is Lizzo's first top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The song's popularity was also boosted by its appearance in the Netflix film Someone Great which help launch the single further into the charts and she went on to perform the tune at the 2019 BET Awards.

8. Ariana Grande – 7 Rings

Can Ariana's hot hit extend into summer? Grande has been in the business of ruling the Billboard Hot 100 for most of 2019, first with the Thank U, Bloodline track, then with the follow-up single "7 Rings". "7 Rings" debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It is a trap-pop and R&B song which features heavy bass and sees Grande discuss "how global success has allowed her to enjoy the finer things". And Grande described the song as a "friendship anthem" that evolves from previous "Thank U, Next" while embracing a new chapter. The song still actives in social media and most of the lists, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Ariana reign through this summer.

9. Taylor Swift – ME!

It's hard to imagine a Taylor Swift album cycle in which she doesn't dominate a summer's worth of headlines. "Me!" was released as the lead single from her upcoming seventh studio album, Lover, and jumped to number 2, only behind Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road", becoming the biggest single-week jump in the Hot's 100 history. You cannot stop this track from being played in every coffee shop, Target commercial, car, bar, you name it this summer. In an interview with Robin Roberts, Swift described the song as about "embracing your individuality and really owning it".

10. Katy Perry – Never Really Over

If it's not the song of the summer, it's certainly the song for proving the return of Katy Perry. "Never Really Over", co-produced by Petty and her best collaborators, is Perry's first new single since 2017. The track entered at number 15 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and reached number 13 on the UK Single Chart. The song sees Perry returning to her roots by setting propulsive electro-pop to a bubblegum beat—a sonic throughline in all of Perry's hits. With the sound of ticking clocks, a disruptive drumline and the return of her hypnotic vocals, Perry gives fans the bombastic comeback they've been yearning for. "Never Really Over" puts Perry back where she belongs: on Sugar Mountain.
